Making friends
Do you have friends at school or do you wish you had more friends? Does your family hassle you about friends and you wish they wouldn’t?
Leaving school can have a huge impact on how we feel about friends and friendships.
You are used to seeing the same people at school every day but after school you might not be with any of your school friends at all.
Life after school is less structured and change is constant. It can be harder to get to know people when you see them less frequently than you did at school.
Getting involved in groups for young people on the spectrum can work well, especially if you work on projects together.
But there's good news! There are many places to find new friends after school and many things that you can learn that can help friendships develop and flourish.
Friendship is also closely tied in with some other topics, like dating and work relationships. It’s a good idea to look at all of these sections of the website.
On this website there’s an exercise where you list your strengths and weaknesses. Did you do that? How do you rate for the skills and personal characteristics that make friendship possible?

There will be some people who won’t be friends with you, and that is okay.
You just need to remember that friendship is a two way street. Sometimes if one person isn’t feeling it, then you don’t have to worry.

Friendship
First, the basics - what makes a good friend? It is important to understand the nature of friendships.
A friend can mean different things to different people, but mostly a friend is someone who you enjoy spending time with and who enjoys spending time with you.
You may enjoy the same activities, share the same interests, have a similar sense of humour or just enjoy each other's company. A friendship is usually a combination of some of these.
Young adults with autism often have trouble making and keeping friends. You might find the "rules" of friendships hard to understand and have had some bad experiences along the way where things have not gone well.
It's important to know that making and keeping friends, like all of the social skills we use every day, can be improved over time and at any age. In fact, everyone can improve their abilities in this area and many people do find that they get better as they get older. Ask your granny!

Finding friends
The first thing to do is to think about what you like doing and what you are interested in.
Sharing interests is the basis for many friendships amongst all sorts of people. So, engaging in hobbies and pastimes that you love can be a good way to find like-minded friends.
You could be following a sporting team, or playing a sport yourself, you might love online gaming or playing a musical instrument. If you find a group that loves what you love, you are off to a good start.
The Meet Up website is another way of finding people in your local area who share your interests.
You might also be interested in social groups specifically for young people with autism.
Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) runs a social group for adults in Sydney, read more here.
The launch of an Aspect sci fi film project saw many of the social group members involved.

Autism Community Network (ACN) has lists of social groups in Sydney and NSW. Find the website here.
For those outside of NSW, contact your state Autism Association for information about social activities for young people on the spectrum.
It's important to say here that the choice to have friends is yours. Everyone is different in this regard - some people like to have lots of friends and some people prefer to have one or two.
Some people like to spend lots of time with their friends and others like to catch up less frequently. There are also some people who really enjoy time on their own.
Whatever makes you happy is ok. This section is for those who want to make friends and need some tips on how to do this. If that's you, keep reading.
Finding friends online
There are some website hubs which connect young people on the spectrum to each other. You might like to check out:
The I Can Network
This network runs social activities and camps in Melbourne and aims to connect young people and to educate and inform schools and workplaces. There's a Facebook group you can join too.
Getting started
Now that you have found someone who you might like to be friends with, you need to see if the feeling is mutual.
The best way to do this is to make a few approaches and see what happens.
You might send them a message on Facebook. If they reply, that's good. If they don't reply, don't hassle them by sending more.
Once a friendship is developing, you can send a Facebook friend request.
You could ask for their mobile number, again, just ask once or twice. If someone doesn't give you their number, it's best not to persist, they might get annoyed with you for hassling them.
It is really important to know when someone may not be interested - one suggestion is the "Three strikes and you are out" rule i.e. if you make three approaches to someone and they say no, then they are probably not interested and you shouldn't ask again.

Preparing for Life by Jed Baker
This book is specifically for young people living with autism and has sections on friendships, dating, workplace etiquette and conversation skills.
For some of you, these tips will be enough to get you on the right track. However, if you feel that you need more help in finding and making friends talk to your parents or trusted adult. They may be able to make some more suggestions for you.
There are some psychologists that specialise in this area - ask your GP for a referral to a psychologist who provides social skills training.

Understanding friendship

The online world provides a wealth of opportunities for forming friendships and much as these can be fraught with difficulties and pitfalls, they can also work really well.

The book is based on the evidence-based PEERS program from UCLA, a manualised social skills intervention used mainly for young people with autism spectrum disorders.

Growing Up On The Spectrum by Lynn Kern Koegel and Claire LaZebnik
This excellent book has a large section on making and maintaining good friendships and supporting and expanding communication and conversation.

The Model Me Kids Video Modeling series is aimed at children and teenagers, however they provide very straight-forward instruction on basic social skills.
This series using a video modelling approach that has shown to be effective. Although these are aimed at children and teenagers, they may be useful for your son or daughter.
